Scottish Finals – Next Stop Northfield?

Posted on 11:04, June 23rd, 2010 by Argyle Admin

Well the Scottish Finals games were played recently at the Rock Bowling Club in Dumbarton with the finalists vetting for a chance to play at Northfield in the Scottish Championships.  The Argyle was represented in the Singles competition by Frank Quinn who had shown some excellent bowling throughout the initial rounds and through the district and inter-district finals played some exceptional shots.  So the scene was set for a great evenings entertainment with all the finals taking place on the green.

Frank started steady enough however his opponent took advantage of playing short ends.  With his opponent gaining the upper hand over a number of ends a comfortable lead had been established.  Frank refused to give up and upon winning the jack he lengthened the game and took advantage himself.  The game then became a bit more competitive with each of the players showing good skill in the execution and choice of shots.  Frank slowly pulled back shots however made a fundamental error when he mistakenly threw the jack too long and it ended up in the ditch.

This error gave his opponent the encouragement he needed and with the shortening of the jack took control again and concluded a win shortly afterwards.

Well done Frank on getting this far you did the club and yourself proud.

Scottish Bowling Association

Senior Fours

Well the club had 3 representatives in the district finals this year with the Senior Fours the first to do battle with their game being played in the afternoon.  The game was played at Dumbarton Bowling Club against a team from Eastfield Bowling Club.  It appeared from the start that Eastfield were handling the green conditions better than Argyle and built up a lead that the Argyle rink were unable to claw back.  So unlucky to the Senior Fours rink.  You did very well getting there in the first place and we are proud that you represented us this far in the competition.

Singles – Represented by Frank Quinn

Frank was drawn to play at Renton Bowling Club  against Townend Bowling Club with the game taking place in the evening.  Several supporters from the club went along to cheer Frank on.  The game started with Frank playing the first few ends and meaning business.  End after end Frank continued to build a commanding lead and consistently producing the better bowls against his opponent.  With this mindset the end was inevitable with Frank winning convincingly 21 shots to 8. Well done Frank.  Keep it going.

Pairs – Rocket and Roadshow

(names changed to protect the innocent)

The Argyle pairing were drawn against a Dumbarton Bowling Club team consisting of Stewart Banks and Michael Connolly with the game being played on the Rock Bowling Club.  The Argyle team started strong and never really looked back taking 6 shots at the first end and with both players playing well slowly built up a commanding lead.  The Argyle skip , known here as “Roadshow”,  produced some exquisite shots on the evening to seal the win.  Final score Argyle 26 – Dumbarton 6

Thanks to the support from the club who came along to cheer the boys to victory and season 2010 marches on for the club.

Keep it going guys….

DBA Finals Report – Tue 1st June

Posted on 12:11, June 2nd, 2010 by Argyle Admin

The club were represented with in the DBA district finals this year in the Pairs competition by Stephen Blair and Ronnie Walker.  The finals were hosted by Dumbuck BC with ALL of the District finals taking place on the night so plenty of activity.

Argyle were drawn to play against their Dumbarton BC opponents on Rink 1 nearest the clubhouse and a great turnout from the our club members ensured that the support for the players was outstanding.

The Argyle rink started well and went into an early lead with Dumbarton slowly catching up.  A very tight game ensued with neither side having any large lead throughout the proposed 17 ends.

There were some fine shots played by both teams on the night in the closing ends Dumbarton went 2 shots clear with 2 ends to play.  Argyle fought back taking a single at the next 2 ends to force an extra end with the scores tied at 12-12.

With Argyle taking the early upper hand in the end and lying shot Dumbarton played with weight and managed to move the jack to the side almost in line with the rink marker.  Argyle then drew the shot within a yard to put the pressure back on Dumbarton.  With 3 bowls to play Dumbarton drew the shot just inside the Argyle bowl and with the last Argyle bowl the attempt to draw the shot failed to come back into the rink Dumbarton won 13-12.

Well done to Dumbarton and good luck next Tuesday with the inter-district final being played @ Cardross BC.  Hard lines to the Argyle team who put up a spirited performance on the night and represented the club admirably.
